Don't forget to do this on the eve of your wedding!

SheenPhotos Ottawa Wedding Photographer Dark Moody Dramatic Candid

In a previous blog post, I talked briefly about the importance of detail shots in helping make your wedding photos as coherent as possible. What are detail shots again, you ask? For those new to wedding planning, detail shots are photos of the many wedding items you will likely have or incorporate in your wedding day. We are talking about your rings, your veil, bouquet, shoes, and the list goes on. I usually take photos of these items first because typically get used during the ceremony, or they get disturbed by the wedding guests - in a good way!

It is important for us photographers to photographs these items because we find that these are things that are easily overlooked by brides and grooms on the day of the wedding. Wedding days can get hectic; there are so many things going on and so many people to talk to that you will inevitably forget to stop and smell the roses, as the saying goes. You will be too busy enjoying yourself that you will forget to admire the impressive bouquet arrangement you ordered or appreciate the custom bracelets you gifted your bridesmaids.

Below is a list of items that I recommend my brides and grooms set aside for me the night before the wedding. As always, communicating with your photographer if there are any key pieces he/she should be photographwill ensure that nothing gets missed!

Lastly, do not feel like you need to include all of them. If you don't have some of the items below or if some do not have any significance to you, leave them out!

  • For the bride to set aside:
  • Dress/Gown - preferrably in a wooden hanger; not plastic ones!
  • Rings - engagement and wedding bands.
  • Veil and hair pieces
  • Bridal Shoes
  • Bouquet
  • Accessories and jewelry
  • Perfume bottle
  • Garter
  • Keepsakes or heirlooms
  • Custom and handmaid items
  • Letter or gift to the groom
  • Wedding Invitation and Program
  • Anything unique to the bride!

For the groom to set aside:

  • Letter or Gift for the Bride
  • Shoes
  • Watch
  • Tie or bow-tie
  • Cuff-links / Tie Clip
  • Cologne
  • Buttoner
  • Belt
  • Liquor
  • Cigars
  • Keepsakes or heirlooms
  • Anything unique to the groom!

BONUS: Ask your florist if they can include a few loose stems! I love incorporating loose stems in detail photographs.
